Timeline
Southern Surgeons Collaborative
1940
At the American Board of Surgery Meeting in 1939, Dr Henry Poer, Dr. Ira Ferguson, Dr. J.D. Martin and Dr. Gaston Guy thought to organize a study club of surgeons of ‘similar age and professional interests.’ In the Spring of 1940 these four gentleman invited others from the South to join them in Birmingham, Alabama. They met at the Tutwiler Hotel in Birmingham.
After the first meeting they agreed to invite a larger group to meet them for their first inaugural meeting at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in October of 1940. Dr. DeBakey documented the clubs initial meeting and published an article in the journal Surgery. The article was titled “Review of the First Meeting of the Surgical Investigative Society of the South”.
